A note from the president

Happy summer AAJA-SD members! I don’t know about all of you but I am so ready for this sunshine!

On tap this month are convention deadlines and mixers to save the date for. But first, I’d like to do a little house-keeping to let you know what has been going on in the local AAJA world.

I have the privilege to share with all of you the recipients of this year’s scholarships and stipends. This year, Dennis-Michael Broussard was awarded the $500 professional stipend, and Regina Ip and Shalu Garg were each awarded $250 each. Congratulations to the three recipients! I know each of them personally and can say with all certainty that we can only expect great things from them in the future.

On May 22, board director in charge of programs Steven Bartholow organized an impressive panel that included: VoiceofSanDiego.org CEO Scott Lewis, North County Times Online Editor Tracy Greer and KPBS Convergence Editor Leng Caloh. The panel, which was moderated by SDSU Professor Rebecca Coates-Nee, focused on how to create content for the online media world. We’ll be uploading audio from the panel in the next couple of weeks, so if you missed out on it, you can find it on our website.

On an unrelated AAJA-SD note, I’d like to send my thoughts out to AAJA-Hawaii. The chapter and its members are going through some major changes with the merger of Advertiser and Star Bulletin. Our fearless leader and national president Sharon Chan is visiting the chapter now to offer her support. Please do the same, by emailing the chapter’s members via its website (http://aajahawaii.blogspot.com/) and let them know their colleagues across the Pacific are here to assist them in any way possible.

Thanks for taking the time to read this month’s newsletter and as always, please keep me posted on how you’re doing. I’ll see you soon!

Best,
Hoa Quach
AAJA-SD President

AAJA Convention in Hollywood, baby

This is going to be a fantastic convention. This is the place to reconnect with your AAJA family. This is the place to network, find mentors and support each other. We’ll be up to our eyeballs in multimedia and journalism training. Courageous journalists Laura Ling, Euna Lee and Roxana Saberi will all be speaking. Here <https://www.aaja.org/programs/convention/registration/> is where to register. Aug. 4-7, Hollywood, Calif.

Don’t forget, we’ll also vote for our next national leaders!

Summer mixers

We’re working on the details of upcoming mixers. But look for a mixer with other journalism groups in town on July 14 and a mixer with other Asian-American organizations in town at the end of the month. Details will be sent out in the coming weeks!
