President’s Report
National Board Representative
Discount Card
December 15
Dear AAJA Members,
October was filled with plenty of events to promote the Asian American Journalists Association in San Diego.
First, we had a booth at the popular San Diego Asian Film Festival and were recognized at the gala for our work with the festival. We also fundraised money by selling discount cards, raffle tickets to SeaWorld San Diego and Cali Deli (New Vietnamese sandwich and coffee café opening up in Hillcrest this December), and auction items at the gala.
Second, our bowling night mixer was full of professionals in fancy (OK, not really fancy) bowling shoes. In fact, we had so much fun talking to just each other – AAJA was given credit for more games that we didn’t play! Look out for another bowling mixer in the future.
In the meantime, I’ve been working with other chapters on the national convention set for August 4-7 in Los Angeles, which our chapter will be responsible for the silent auction.
Have a great November members and I’ll see you soon!
Sincerely,
Hoa Quach
AAJA President
Jenny Hamel, fab reporter from San Diego 6, is our chapter’s new national board representative. She will be replacing Don Chareunsy.
Aside from serving on our board in San Diego, Jenny will be the liaison between San Diego and the national board. She will attend conferences on behalf of San Diego and the annual convention.
Please welcome Jenny to our board!
Chair of the fundraising committee, Savy Hak, has been working diligently to ensure AAJA has funds! With the assistance of other board members, she created a “discount card,” a credit-card-type-card with 24 businesses in San Diego County offering discounts to any card holders. From Mr. Dumpling in Kearny Mesa to The Corner in East Village to a hot boxing center near SDSU – any card holders will receive exclusive discounts.
This discount cards are on sale now and can be purchased from any of the board members! Just give us a ring. We’re also looking for more people to help us sell, so if you can successfully harass people to support journalists – please let us know.
For more info about participating businesses visit our Web site.
Have any talents outside of the journalism sphere? If so, we want you to participate in our talent show Thursday, January 28!
We’re lining up to 15 acts from folks within the media industry. So far, we have a reporter who can do a mean impression of Elvis Presley, a multimedia guy who plays in a reggae band and a media representative who (actually) sings really well. Want to know who they are? Set the date for the talent show now!
Anybody who would like to participate in an act, please email President@AAJASanDiego.org
AAJA San Diego is teaming up with other local journo groups for the annual holiday party. This year, the party will take place at Solare Ristorante and Lounge on Tuesday, Dec. 15 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
$20 includes a tapas buffet, one cocktail, wine or beer and more! Please RSVP with President@AAJASanDiego.org by Dec. 11. Address is 2820 Rossevelt Road, 92126.
